This made-for-cable biopic originally went out under the simpler title
Margaret Bourke-White. Farrah Fawcett stars as the famed
photojournalist, whose work for Life magazine from 1936 onward gained
her worldwide celebrity. The best scenes, showing the dauntless Bourke-
White (Fawcett) at work in the most grueling and perilous of situations,
are all too fleeting. The filmmakers evidently believed that the audience
would be more intrigued by Bourke-White's stormy relationship with her
husband, novelist Erskine Caldwell (played with a fluctuating Southern
accent by Frederic Forrest). The film's chief assets are the well-focused
performance of Farrah Fawcett, and the lensed-on-location sequences in
Louisiana and Moscow.

1992 Storyville
Southern Gothic tale set in New Orleans about a feckless young lawyer
running for a local congressional seat. Neither Cray nor his family is
strong candidates for the family values vote. Cray is separated from his
wife and willingly indulges in an affair with a beautiful and mysterious
young woman. This leads to a blackmail plot when he finds out his lover
has been videotaping their antics. There's also a murder investigation
and a host of family skeletons rattling around. Robards is fine as the
crafty uncle but Spader's low-key attitude works against the story.
Storyville marks the directorial debut of Frost.

1992 The Gun in Betty Lou's Handbag
Shy, small town librarian with a dull marriage is looking for excitement
when she stumbles across a gun used in a murder. She decides
excitement will follow her (false) confession to the crime leaving her
husband thunderstruck, the police confused, and the gossip line
humming. She also intrigues the real bad guy, who comes looking for her.
Lame silliness is redeemed somewhat by Miller, but there's some
surprisingly nasty violence given the comedy label.

1993 The Pelican Brief
Tulane law student Darby Shaw (Julia Roberts) writes a speculative brief
on the murders of two Supreme Court justices that results in more murder
and sends her running for her life. Fairly faithful to the Grisham
bestseller, but the multitude of characters is confusing. Pakula adds style
and star-power, but much will depend on your tolerance for paranoid
political thrillers and ability to accept Roberts as the smart cookie who
hits on the right answer and then manages to keep herself alive while
bodies are dropping all around her. Washington is sharp as reporter Gray
Grantham, the guy Roberts looks like she falls hard for (but the book's
romance is nowhere to be seen).

Blue, on parental leave from the espionage biz, who are on vacation with

Nolte does Bobby Knight in this saga of Western U basketball coach Pete
Bell, suffering through his first losing season. What follows is a tug of
war between rich alumni who want to win at any cost and his ethics as he
recruits for a new season. Larger than life hoopster O'Neal's film debut.
McDonnell and Woodard are merely afterthoughts, but look for cameos
from many real life b-ballers, including Dick Vitale and Larry Bird. Average
script is bolstered by exciting game footage, shot during real games for
authenticity.

1994 Interview with the Vampire
Portrayal of the elegantly decadent world of vampires and their prey,
which features the perverse Lestat (Cruise) who decides to make 18th-
century New Orleans aristocrat Louis (Pitt) his latest recruit. Only
problem is Louis is horrified by his blood-sucking nature and whines
about it for 200 years (it does get tedious). Lestat even makes a child-
vampire, Claudia (Dunst), for their own very dysfunctional family but this
doesn't turn out well. Director Jordan brings some much needed humor to
the dark mix along with some overdone gore. The first book in Anne
Rice's "The Vampire Chronicles" was a 17-year film project beset by
controversy, including the casting of Cruise (who looks nothing like Rice's
description of the character, although Pitt does), leading to an outcry
among the cult book's fans though Rice finally came around. Slater
replaced the late River Phoenix as the interviewer.

1994 OcchioPinocchio
Elements of the original Italian fairy tale, Pinocchio can still be found in
this modern and loose adaptation which was filmed in Texas, Louisiana,
and Tuscany. In a mythical, unnamed country, Brando is a tough old
banking magnate who discovers upon his despised brother suicide that he
has a son. The son, known as "Pinocchio," works as an orderly at a
nursing home. He was raised in this place, and though not intelligent,
Pinocchio is a hard worker. Brando, excited at finally having an heir,
removes his son from the home and takes him into his fast-paced, luxury
filled world. Upon meeting the other aging bankers in Brando's world,
Pinocchio has trouble adjusting. The company psychiatrist examines
Pinocchio and determines that he will probably never adapt. This prompts
Pinocchio to run away. While in flight, he meets hard-bitten, streetwise
Lucy, who saw a murder and now is a suspect. They run together and
encounter a variety of shady characters that parallel those in the original
story.

1994 The Client
Another legal thriller from the Grisham factory. Reggie Love (Sarandon) is
a troubled attorney hired by 11-year-old Mark (Renfro), who witnessed
the suicide of a Mafia attorney and now knows more than he should.
Ambitious federal prosecutor Foltrigg's (Jones) willing to risk the boy's
life in exchange for career advancement. Lacks the mega-big Hollywood
names of "The Firm" and "The Pelican Brief" but gains solid acting in
return with Renfro a find in his film debut. No frills, near-faithful
adaptation by Schumacher basically travels down the path of least
resistance.

True story of a nun whose anti-death penalty beliefs put her in moral
crisis with grieving victims when she becomes the spiritual advisor to a
death-row murderer. Based on the book by Sister Helen Prejean, Sarandon
stars as the nun who develops a relationship of understanding with
inmate Poncelet (Penn), unwavering in her Christian beliefs even though
Penn's character shows little or no remorse for the two young lovers he
was accused of murdering. Penn offers one of the best performances (but
worst hair-dos) of his career, while writer/director Robbins presents both
sides of the death-penalty issue mingled with simple human compassion.

1995 Stormswept
Horror film set in a Louisiana mansion with good location shooting among
overall weak production values. There's a good bit more nudity than is
